The hearty meat of fish is a staple ingredient in the Filipino household. Because of the easy access to the ocean, we have a wide array of fish species to choose from. A distinctly Pinoy favorite is the milkfish — locally referred to as bangus.
In another informative episode, our ‘Doktor ng Bayan’ Dr. Willie Ong shares with us the nutritional value and benefits of the milkfish.
Some people get tired of the greasy and fatty taste of pork, while there are those who have grown too used to the taste of chicken. Our taste buds crave variety and it’s great that we also have different types of fish readily available. Milkfish is a popular choice here in the country because it tastes great whether it’s grilled, steamed, or paired with a delectable sauce.
The bangus is loaded with nutrients and vitamins that are truly beneficial for the body. It has Omega-3 fatty acids that are good for the heart. This substance could also be helpful in battles against Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, and other ailments.
The fat found in the milkfish belly is also 60% good fat which means that we can eat it two to three times a week.
In terms of styles of cooking, the ideal way would be to stay away from frying and using too much oil. It is always a good habit to eat milkfish in moderation, just like in any other types of food that Dr. Willie Ong has endorsed.
