Parenting Tips 101: How to raise well-mannered and smart children

As parents, you play an important role in the lives of your children. From the moment these innocent and vulnerable infants are born, the prerogative of molding them to become good citizens of the society lies within the palm of your hands.

The first three years of a child’s life is considered as the most critical stage of his or her developmental stage. It is the time wherein toddlers undergo a series of cognitive and emotional changes that greatly affect their whole being.

According to Dr. Willie Ong, there are easy ways that parents could take into consideration in order to raise their children into well-mannered and smart individuals.

Given that children during their early childhood stage are not yet exposed to the chaotic environment outside, this is the perfect time for you to teach them good morals and values.

1. Before your child reaches three years old, it would be better if you restrict her or him from watching television. Instead, allow them to interact and socialize with other people. Do not simply give them books and toys and leave them unattended. Instruct them on how to use the material and teach them its purpose.

2. When you notice that your children love to feel isolated and seem to be quiet most of the time, take the initiative to talk to them. Learn to compliment them by simply saying “good job” and other positive expressions that would boost their confidence and self-esteem.

3. By the time a child reaches three-years-old, then you could already allow him or her to watch the television. However, let them watch only for a span of 1 to 2 hours a day.

Interestingly, several studies have revealed that children who were given the right attention and providence by their parents during their childhood years are more family-oriented, more sociable, and have become more successful than those who were not.
