Dr. Willie Ong talks about a common health problem, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Dr. Willie Ong is back once again with another instructional YouTube clip. This time, our very own Doktor ng Bayan  is here to tell us more about the medical condition called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Dr. Ong shares that a lot of his patients complain about one thing – their hands. It’s completely surprising that Filipinos would be worried about it but come to think of it, most of the jobs found here in the country require the use of our hands.

For those who don’t know, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a medical condition that occurs when the meridian nerve found along our arms all the way to our hands gets twisted.  Now, this highly important nerve is responsible for a lot of our hand movements and feeling which means that we have to take great care of it.

Some of the symptoms that he listed down to check if we are suffering from a twisted or strained meridian nerve is numbness (pamamanhid),  loss of strength, and a weakened sense of feeling in your hands.

Of course, there are obvious activities that can cause the rapid deterioration of our hands such as excessive typing, washing of clothes, squeezing (pag-piga), and sewing.

Being overweight, having a very salty diet, and thyroid problems can also affect the health of your hands. As unfortunate or unfair as it may be, those who constantly use their hands every day will no doubt experience loss of hand strength.

But don’t worry since Dr. Willie Ong is here to give us some free medical tips to avoid or lessen the strain that our meridian nerve is under.

Doc WIllie says we should make it a point to always rest our hands for one or two whole days. It is important to earn a living but we should also keep our health in check. People should also avoid carrying heavy bags because it keeps the wrist in a constant bent position.

Other situations that can worsen the condition happens during our sleep. We must never bend it on our chests, behind our backs, and worst of all, according to Dr. Ong, is when we lay our heads down on top of our hands.
