For Dr. Willie Ong and his wife, Dr. Liza Ong, Filipinos should be more serious about taking care of their body. There should be no excuses when it comes to important check-ups or doctor’s appointments. In their new YouTube video, the doctor couple shared medical knowledge about the most common diseases that kill Filipinas.
The first disease they covered was breast cancer.
Dr. Willie and Dr. Liza shared how surprised they were to come across so many Filipinas who are suffering from this condition. They shared that about 10% of Filipina women are affected by breast cancer and it is the number one cause of deaths in the country for women.
Apart from genetics, Dr. Willie pointed out how diets could play a factor to our susceptibility to cancer. Fortunately, there are ways to rid ourselves of this terrible illness. The best cure? Prevention.
As much as possible, cancer should be nipped in the bud. No matter how great you feel right now, you should undergo self-breast examinations and mammograms to diagnose your condition as early as possible.
It is important to do this examination every month, in between your menses. Dr. Liza also shared that it is most effective when done in the shower because our hands are slippery when wet, which will enable us to more easily detect hard lumps that are typically the size of marbles. If you do happen to feel something, immediately seek the assistance of a doctor.
The doctors also advised women to keep an eye on the size of their breasts, saying that roughly equal-sized breasts means you’re all good. If the skin on your chest area resembles the texture of an orange, you should probably go to the doctor immediately.
The second disease they discussed was cervical cancer. Common symptoms of this type of cancer would be spotting (pagdurugo) or intense vaginal bleeding. If it’s the latter, please hurry to your nearest OB-GYN to have yourself pap-smeared. If you are already in the later stages of this disease, you will notice a funky smell emanating from your private areas.
The medical couple reiterated the importance of getting yourself checked. Even if it means that you had to borrow some money, never skip an appointment. Luckily, they claim that there are vaccines that can help prevent cervical cancer.
Other diseases they discussed include urinary tract infection and high blood pressure. Treatments for UTI involve drinking lots of water, probably 10 glasses per day. You should also undergo a urinalysis that can cost around PHP 50 before you take antibiotics. High blood pressure, on the other hand, is usually caused by weight-related problems.
The last disease they discussed is diabetes. As usual, Dr. Willie and Dr. Liza encouraged everyone to limit eating or drinking sugary food. They advised to avoid soft drinks and different types of processed juice drinks. Desserts are alright but eat in moderation.
