As we age, our skin ages as well. A common concern a lot of people share is the formation of wrinkles and fine lines, making us look ‘old’ and ‘tired’. Luckily, Dr. Liza Ramoso-Ong shares some very helpful tips on how we can address this. In a short video, the good doctor discusses thoroughly what the skin is and how it works.
According to the doctor, the skin has three layers. The outermost layer is called the epidermis, where the keratin is stored to prevent fluids from entering the body. It is also where the dead cells get sloughed off.
The middle layer is the dermis, where the elastin, collagen, and veins can be found.
The innermost part is where the fat cells are, which are responsible for keeping our bodies warm.
Dr. Ramoso-Ong explained that as we get older, our skin also starts to sag, thereby forming wrinkles and fine lines. This is because once we reach the age of 20, collagen production is significantly reduced.
When a person hits the age of 30 and above, the skin gets dehydrated because the fat cells start to shrink.
At the age of 40, our body completely stops producing collagen, causing our skin to sag even more.
To prevent wrinkles from forming, Dr. Ramosa-Ong suggests applying moisturizer every day as early as in our twenties. She also highly recommends using moisturizing lotions to hydrate our skin and prevent it from losing its natural water content. Lastly, the doctor tells us that we should always apply sunscreen when we go out to protect our skin from the sun’s UV rays.
All of these products can be bought from your local department stores and groceries. The good doctor also reminds us that it is important that we drink 8-10 glasses of water a day to keep our skin hydrated.
