Everything you need to know about irregular menstruation

Regular menstruation usually occurs to a woman monthly, particularly every 28 days. However, there are times when menstruation happens every 40-45 days. When it comes to irregular menstruation, however, there are several explanations that should be considered.

In the simplest sense, irregular menstruation means your periods occur in unpredictable patterns.

To further explain the concept of irregular menstruation, trusted obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Sharon Mendoza, together with renowned medical expert Dr. Willie Ong, our beloved Doktor ng Bayan, shared important lessons about this condition.

1. A change in the menstrual cycle

A sudden shift from regular menstruation to irregular menstruation is alarming. While there are women experiencing irregularity in their menstrual cycle from time to time, it is important to pay attention if there is no menstruation for more than three months.

2. Hormonal imbalances

The number one cause of irregular menstruation is stress which leads to hormonal imbalances. As a result of this, some women might experience a change in their menstural cycle due to progesterone and estrogen imbalances.

3. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)  and Myoma

Although it might appear unusual,  Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a probable reason for irregular menstrual cycles.  Moreover, a benign tumor called a myoma could also be the cause.  Massive myomas can affect the ovaries, which can lead to irregular menstruation.

4. Conduct an ultrasound in your uterus

Although irregular menstruation is oftentimes perceived as having long unpredictable intervals in the menstrual cycles, it’s also important to take into consideration that it might happen in short periods of time. Always visit an obstetrician-gynecologist every now and then to keep updated on your reproductive health organs.
